Pacific Islands University

Pacific Islands University is a fully accredited Christian University committed to providing an accessible education for Micronesians that retains the excellence that one would expect in a state-side college.

The gospel arrived in Micronesia about 100 years ago, but until this school was formed in 1976, there was no formal way to train church leaders.  PIU continues to train church leaders, but since then, it has expanded to training leaders for all facets of society.  The main campus is on Guam, which places it in Micronesia, but also in a US territory.  The school offers AA, BA and MA degrees.  All instruction is in English, but nearly all of the students are English as a second language speakers.  Karyn’s work is largely focused on leadership development through teaching, counseling, and relationship building.  One facet of this is her work with Micronesian college-age students who are seeking an accredited college education in a Christian context.  Her hope is to encourage them to return to their islands equipped as people of influence.

This aspect of my work is executed through the interdenominational efforts of Pacific Islands University (PIU), headquartered in Guam. PIU is the only accredited Christian college in the region. Most of my school energy is spent teaching counseling and other social science type classes, and working with the students on interpersonal issues. This is primarily accomplished through personal counseling, mentoring, and discipleship. Additionally, I provide mentoring and encouragement to PIU staff.
